Paper travelers work fine when nothing goes wrong. A unit moves through its route, an operator signs off at each station, and the folder ends up complete in the box at the end of the line. The problem is what happens when a supervisor needs to know something at 10am, not at end-of-shift: how far along is Line 2, which stations are behind, and whether the batch due out today is actually going to make it.
With paper, the honest answer is "let me go and look." Someone walks the floor, counts travelers, asks a few operators, and comes back with a picture that was already twenty minutes stale by the time it reached the office. It's not that people are slow — it's that the information genuinely doesn't exist anywhere until someone goes and collects it.
The real change isn't the tablet
It's tempting to think digitisation means handing operators a tablet instead of a clipboard, and stopping there. That's necessary but not sufficient. What actually changes the supervisor's morning is that the same scan an operator does to move a unit forward is also, instantly, an update to a live picture everyone else can see — no walk required, no stale count, no "let me check and get back to you."
What tends to go wrong in the switch
The rollouts that struggle are usually the ones that digitise the paperwork without changing the workflow underneath it — a PDF traveler on a tablet is still a traveler. The ones that work start from the question a supervisor actually asks during a shift — where's the bottleneck, what's behind, what needs attention right now — and build the screen around answering that, station by station, in something close to real time.
Operators adapt to a scan-based flow quickly, usually within a shift or two, as long as it's faster than what it replaced. The harder part is organisational: once the floor is visible, decisions that used to wait for end-of-shift reports start happening during the shift instead. That's the actual payoff — and it's also the part that takes the most getting used to.
